Tech Tips Tuesdays: End-of-Semester Tips

A header graphic reading "Tech Tips Tuesdays." There is a laptop sitting at an angle. It is purple and bright green, with a green display on its monitor. The background has ones and zeroes floating as code, along with a purple circuit line snaking behind the text.

Good morning,

Yesterday, I enabled confetti on Canvas. When students submit work on time, they’ll see bits of confetti fluttering across their screen to celebrate a job well done! 🎉 I hope this provides a bit of levity to students during this stressful time.

With Spring 2024 nearing its end, here are some quick tips to keep in mind:

  • Double-check all aspects of your grading. This includes checking that you have your points and percentages set up to match your syllabus on the Assignments page, confirming that Roll Call Attendance is deleted or not affecting the final grade, verifying your grading scheme if you have one enabled, and doing a quick “gut-check” on the Grades page to make sure none of the calculations seem off.
  • Confirm that all your final assignments are visible. If you have a “Final” module to release, be sure to publish both the module and the assignment—the assignment won’t be visible otherwise. It’s a good idea to run through your course with Student View to make sure everything has been squared away.
  • Check for zeroes on missing assignments in the gradebook. If students have missed an assignment but you’ve given them no grade, that assignment won’t affect their final grade calculations. Make sure you add in any zeroes for missing work so that students are aware of actual grade calculations. You can filter the gradebook for missing work to easily check for this!
  • If you need to reassign assignments or give different due dates to students, be sure to “Add” a new due date and not change the existing due date. You can see more about why on this previous newsletter.

If you have any questions, please reach out! Enjoy SpearsFest today, and I’ll see you next week for the last newsletter of the academic year.
