Good afternoon,
Hello, everyone, and happy Spearsfest! 🐨
As we are in the penultimate week of Spring 2023, I’ve turned on the confetti cannons! Every time a student submits work on time, they’ll see an animation of confetti on their screen. Mixed in are fun emoji like flowers, trophies, and more. Hopefully this can alleviate some end-of-semester stress.
Winner, winner!
For today’s tips, let’s look at two aspects of grading in Canvas that might be useful as you’re calculating final grades.
Firstly, do you have a grading scheme enabled? This makes it so that the letter grade for the numeric final grade shows up based on the ranges you have in your syllabus:
If you don’t have a grading scheme and would like to add one, go to “Settings” on your main course menu, then scroll down not quite to the end of the page to the option to “Enable course grading scheme.” Check this box, and you’ll see an option to edit the letter grade ranges via “view grading scheme.”
There are some defaults in the system (I believe “Undergraduate” is a ten-point scale), but you can make individual adjustments as well. After you make any changes, be sure to save on the Settings page to have them go into effect.
For more information on grading schemes, check out this guide: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor-Guide/How-do-I-add-a-grading-scheme-in-a-course/ta-p/1054.
On the Grades page, you can make adjustments to final grades by adding an “Override” column, which lets you raise or lower a final grade manually.
For example, Jane Doe has a D in the course, but due to some makeup work and extra credit work, she has earned a C in the class overall. I can make an adjustment so that she sees her true final grade in Canvas using Override:
Note that because I enabled a grading scheme for this course, I could just put the letter to reflect how it would be input into the Grade Entry of Koala Connection.
To enable the override, click on the gear icon at the top right of the Grades page, click the Advanced tab, then select the option to “Allow final grade override.”
I hope the rest of your week goes well! See you next Tuesday for the last newsletter of Spring 2023.
