Good morning,
Happy fall! 🍂 Today, here’s a quick tip about moderating Canvas quizzes!
One setting that you can change with Canvas quizzes is to make them timed. For some students with accommodations, however, that time will need to be adjusted. The way this is done depends on the quiz “engine,” or the way the quiz was created.
To figure out what kind of quiz engine is being used—especially if you inherited another course and its quizzes—go to the Quizzes page. Even if the page is hidden from students (denoted with an eye icon ), you’ll have access to that page.
By each quiz, you’ll see a little rocket ship icon. If the quiz was made with Classic Quizzes, the icon will be empty: . If the quiz was made with New Quizzes, the icon will be filled: . This is an easy way to distinguish between quiz types for Respondus, as well!
As far as adding accommodations goes, let’s start with Classic Quizzes. Click on the quiz name to go to its assignment page. On the left, you’ll see a button to “Moderate This Quiz.”
Click that button, and all your students will be listed. Each student's quiz can be moderated by clicking the pencil icon beside their name. Although the buttons that pop up will mostly be for adding retakes, if the student hasn’t taken the quiz yet, adding time will grant time to the first take. For more information, see this guide.
To add time with New Quizzes, click on the quiz's name, then find the button that reads “Build” at the bottom of the page.
Build is how you add questions to New Quizzes, but also how you moderate. There’s a “Moderate” tab at the tab that you can click to reveal all your students’ names.
For New Quizzes, instead of editing students' retakes, you’ll go to the column that reads "Accommodations," then click the pencil icon on a specific student's row. A pop-up will appear where you can add time to a quiz attempt, among other things.
Note that I am giving an additional 15 minutes to Jane Doe Student's quiz attempt(s). If a quiz is 30 minutes, she'll have 45 minutes to complete it.
So, there you have it: two ways to add time to students’ attempts depending on the type of quiz they’re taking. Remember that you can also add new due dates and attempts for students to other assignments as well through the assignment settings!
