AI in the Classroom: Generative Tools and Beyond: Home

AI may be synonymous with “ChatGPT” for many, but artificial intelligence goes beyond generative use. Artificial intelligence, trained by machine learning to do powerful analytics, has been integrated into the daily lives of everyone—students, faculty, and otherwise.

  • AI is used in search engines and content services like the Kindle bookstore or streaming TV networks to recommend titles.
  • AI is used in research databases to allow users to do things such as talk to texts (ask questions based on papers) and to more deeply explore related items.
  • AI is used to, yes, generate text and other media with tools from ChatGPT to Copilot to even embedded tools such as suggestions from Microsoft Word or Canvas.

As AI has so many uses, it’s important for educators to consider how they approach AI syllabus policies and AI use statements. Using "no AI” is rapidly becoming an impossibility, and so it’s vital to explain to students what uses are acceptable, either through naming tools or what AI is to be used and not used for.
